Diabetes Education

The Diabetes Care Center at Central Florida Regional Hospital – recognized by the American Diabetes Association – provides education and dietary counseling to help patients effectively manage their disease, including the following classes and individual counseling opportunities:


Diabetes Self-Management Education

(American Diabetes Association (ADA) recognized)

This ten hour comprehensive course has been recognized by the ADA to provide evidence based, high quality education, in an organized and effective manner. An individual assessment with a Certified Diabetes Educator will determine your learning needs and together, you will decide the most appropriate classes for you to attend to gain the knowledge you need to live a safe and healthy life with diabetes.


Prevent T2 Program

(Center for Disease Control (CDC) recognized)

PreventT2 is based on CDC research that showed that people with prediabetes who lost 5 to 7 percent of their body weight (10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person) by making modest changes reduced their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. This year-long program is for those who meet the following criteria:

  • 18 years or older
  • Body Mass Index ≥24 kg/m2 (≥22 if Asian)
  • No previous diagnosis of type 1 or type 2 diabetes
  • Diagnosis of prediabetes within the past year or history of Gestational Diabetes
  • HbA1C: 5.7%–6.4%
  • Fasting plasma glucose: 100–125 mg/dL
  • 2-hour plasma glucose (after a 75 gm glucose load): 140–199 mg/dL

Community Workshops

The Eat Healthy, Be Active Community Workshop Series is a free community service program from Central Florida Regional Hospital. The eight workshops are designed to move you from the “thinking” phase of healthier lifestyles to taking desired health actions.  Workshops 1, 7, and 8 are specifically designed for those with Type 2 diabetes.  The remaining workshops can be taken by anyone who wants to improve their health.  Even though there is no charge for attending, you will need to register so that materials are available for you. Diabetes Support Group

The Central Florida Regional Hospital Diabetes Support Group meets the third Sunday of every month (except December) at 2:00 p.m. in the Central Florida Regional Hospital Classroom. The group provides ongoing diabetes education and support and features a wide range of topics and speakers to assist adults living with diabetes.


Gestational Diabetes Counseling

Expectant mothers who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes can help ensure a safe delivery and a healthy start for their baby by participating in a personalized diabetes wellness program that includes:

  • Medical nutrition therapy
  • Glucose monitoring
  • Safe exercise
  • Preventing maternal and fetal complications

Patients with gestational diabetes meet with our diabetes educator by individual appointment.
